Dylan grew up in Sandakan, Sabah. The road from there to a law degree at the University of Malaya was not an obvious one — and it ran, for one unlikely year, through Michigan, USA, where a UGRAD scholarship established under President Barack Obama sent him to study at Grand Valley State University. He went as a small-town boy on a borrowed opportunity, and came back knowing what one opened door can do for a person. The lesson repeated itself in practice. When the MCO lockdowns hit, Dylan was a young lawyer at his previous firm — and the work he helped bring in during those months, between RM500,000 and RM1 million in fees, was what kept every salary in the office paid. It taught him what a law firm actually is when you strip the title off the door: the people it feeds, and the clients it answers to. 这个道理在执业路上再次得到印证。行动管制令（MCO）来袭时，Dylan 还是前事务所的一名年轻律师—— 那几个月里他协助带进的业务，律师费介于 RM500,000 至 RM1,000,000 之间，正是这笔收入撑起了整间办公室的每一份薪水。 这让他看清了，把门牌卸下之后，一家律师楼真正的模样：它养活的人，和它必须答复的客户。
He could have stayed on that road. Instead, after proving himself again in a partnership, he started Dylan Chong & Co — not to put his own name on a door, but because he believed the work could be done differently: technology handling the paperwork and the chasing, so lawyers have time to explain; every step of a matter told to the client in plain language; and young lawyers trained the way he wished someone had trained him — toward partnership, not just employment. 他本可以留在那条路上。但在合伙关系中再次证明自己之后，他创办了 Dylan Chong & Co—— 不是为了把自己的名字挂在门上，而是因为他相信这份工作可以有不一样的做法：让科技处理文书与跟进， 律师才有时间好好解释；案件的每一步，都用客户听得懂的语言交代清楚；年轻律师则按照他当年希望有人栽培自己的方式来栽培—— 朝着合伙人的方向，而不只是一份工作。
